megacorps people don’t think about

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I’m not sure whether I can call them “monopolies” or “multinationals”, because in each of these cases, these organizations are not multi-national and do not have a complete monopoly on their market, nor are they “evil”, merely huge and in the background, controlling more than you think they do.

  • Willow Creek Association: this church franchise builds similar “big box” churches all over the country and provides “blueprints” for services, products, etc. I have personally been to the Church of the Saviour location in Wayne, PA.
  • Luxottica: Lens Crafters, Pearl Vision, Sunglass Hut, all owned by this giant corp. No wonder you can’t buy cheap glasses anywhere. I get mine from Zenni Optical;Perpetual FatWallet thread.
  • True World, aka “The Moonies”: Rev. Moon’s disciples supply the majority of the sushi in the U.S. They are fully vertically integrated, controlling everything from fishing to preparation to trucking. Chicago Tribune story,Willamette Week Online article.
